Youth Work

If you have great interpersonal and organisational skills, and a passion for working with young people, then you might find youth work to be the rewarding career challenge that you are looking for. CIT’s Youth Work programs prepare you to develop and facilitate community-based programs for young people, to address their social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs.

The Certificate IV course begins by building a fundamental understanding of the skills, techniques and theories required in the area of youth work and augments this with opportunities for practical experience. You will learn to communicate with and provide support for young people at risk or with mental health issues, and graduates from these programs may find work in the community services field including residential and non-residential programs.

Those advancing to the Diploma program will develop skills, techniques and theories in the area of community welfare. You will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of community welfare. Graduates of this program have found work as community welfare workers in health and community services fields.

This program includes work placement (Cert IV qualifications requires 80 hours and Diploma qualifications 120 hours of placement). Before undertaking any industry placement, you must be eligible to apply for, and hold, a 'Working with Vulnerable People Check'. Information will be provided on enrolment.

Certificate IV: 80 hours industry placement, unpaid.
Diploma: 120 hours, unpaid.

Students are encouraged to and regularly find their industry placements; however there is an Industry Placement Coordinator who manages relationships with community organisations throughout the Australia Capital Territory and who helps students finding an adequate placement.

  • Job Opportunities

    Certificate IV: This program provides you with the skills, techniques and theories in the area of youth work. You will have the opportunity for practical experience. Graduates completing the program are working as youth workers in the community services field including residential and non-residential programs.

    Diploma: Manager/advanced skills community welfare worker in the health and community services field - including children's services, family support, women's and men's services, residential and non-residential.

  • Teaching Methods and Assessment

    Modes of study include simulated workplaces for students to practice their new skills, work experience or work placement, supervised study time with a teacher and on-line learning and student engagement through e-Learn.

    Students must complete class work, assignments, practical components and project work throughout the course. They may then be assessed using a combination of these tasks, continuous assessment and examinations. Assessment outcomes may be based on competency, marks and grades, or a combination of all three assessment methods.

  • Pathways to Further Study

    On successful completion of the Diploma of Community Services students may be eligible for up to one year’s credit towards the Bachelor of Social Work with Australian Catholic University.

    All CIT Diploma's and Advanced Diploma's give students entry into the University of Canberra (UC). Students are advised to speak directly with UC in relation to course choices and pathways.
