Overview

The global fitness industry is worth over 75 billion dollars and continues to grow every year. Get your piece of the action with a quality qualification that allows you to register with Fitness Australia as a Personal Trainer, as well as to work in a variety of settings including as gyms, fitness facilities, pools, community facilities and in outdoor environments.

Foundation skills and experiences include working in a range of exercise instruction situations, including group exercise, writing gym programs and supervising exercise environments. Advanced study allows students to perform a variety of activities independently in a fitness setting. You will gain experience within a range of exercise situations focusing on programming, exercise prescription and personal training.

Students benefit from CIT’s extensive on-site fitness training facilities including a state-of-the-art gym with modern equipment, as well as access to Canberra’s many public spaces including its expansive public parks – many of which allow you to train on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

This program includes the following placement:
Certificate III: Unpaid, 20 hours/week (9 weeks) at the CIT Fit & Well gym
Certificate IV: Unpaid, 20 hours/week (9 weeks) at CIT Fit & Well gym, plus one-on-one training of gym clients

Entry Requirements

ACT Senior Secondary Certificate or equivalent OR Adult Entry with practical work or other professional experience | Students must also meet one of the following English requirements IELTS 5.5 (no band score less than 5.0) | TOEFL iBT - 46 | PTE Academic - 42 (minimum of 36 in each band) | TOEFL PBT - 527 | Cambridge English test (C1 Advanced and B2 First) - 162.

Job Opportunities

Certificate IV:
Once registered with Fitness Australia: Personal trainer, program coordinator, (depending on electives achieved) children's trainer, or older client trainer. Gym Instructor

Teaching Methods and Assessment

Students will be given opportunities to work in the purpose built commercial facility Fit and Well at Bruce CIT campus. Students will gain experience and develop skills to industry standard with real people in a supportive learning environment. This involvement will provide students with the workplace skills to begin a career in the fitness industry. This program will require a workplace for the delivery of certain units pertaining to work undertaken in the fitness industry.

Students will also participate in online learning including a range of eLearn activities such as quizzes, short answer questions, case studies, self-directed activities, theory and online discussions facilitated by a CIT teacher.

Assessment id carried out through direct observation, a portfolio of work samples and evidence compiled by students, reports and presentations.
